Rachel Hanssens, Belgium, born 1929, throws 7.43m to achieve silver medal position in the women’s shot put competition, 80-84 year old age group. A month off her 85th birthday, Hanssens will be threatening world records when she goes up an age group later in the year. Hanssens is a former international javelin thrower for Belgium and she is the current world record holder for women’s javelin throw in the 80-84 year old age group.
Ilga Buntika, Latvia, born 1939, competes in the women’s shot put, 75-79 year old age group where her throw of 7.49m earned her 5th position overall (gold was won with a throw of 9.73m).
Mary Trotto USA, born 1948, competes in the preliminary round of the 200m dash, though her time of 47.95secs, some 8 seconds slower than the next athlete, failed to get her through to the next round (gold was won in a time of 31.13secs). Passionate about masters athletics, Trotto is an active member of the US masters track and field federation.
Doronkina Oxana, Russia, born 1968, competes in the women’s javelin throw, age group 45-49 years. Her throw of 29.75m earned her 8th place. Gold was won with a throw of 45.35m (the world record for this age group is 50.47m).
